I Met The Walrus

Some of you may have already seen this but I hadn't until today and I'm really blown away by it.  Here is the deal, in 1969 a 14-year-old Beatle fanatic named Jerry Levitan, armed with a reel-to-reel tape deck, snuck into John Lennon's hotel room in Toronto and convinced John to do an interview about peace.  Could you imagine pulling something like that off as a 14 year old?  If John Lennon had been alive when I was 14 and I had actually met him, I'm pretty positive I would have sounded like an absolute moron.  I imagine it would have been quite an accomplishment for me to have been able to speak at all.  That wasn't the case for Jerry Levitan though.  One of the things that strikes me most about this interview is how composed and articulate Jerry comes across.  Maybe it was what I assume would have been a peaceful presence from John Lennon that made Jerry come across as so comfortable during the interview.  Maybe I just get too starstruck but come on, this is John Lennon we're talking about.

Anyway, here we are 38 years later.  Mr. Levitan decided to produce a short film about his encounter using the original interview recording as the soundtrack.  The film is directed by Josh Raskin who has combined the work of James Braithwaite and the digital illustrations of Alex Kurina.  The result is really touching when you think of some 14 year old kid sneaking his way into John Lennon's Toronto hotel room and John taking the time to talk to him.  The interview is an amazing document of the ideals of one of the world's most incredible musicians and what is a timeless message.  It sounds cliché but it sure does feel like we could use John Lennon right now.  Obviously his thoughts and spirit will have to do and luckily we have this to remind us of those things.

Glam + Grunge = Glang Fever

This isn't Spinal Tap but I'm sure it goes all the way to 11.  How could anything that combines Glam and Grunge into a whole new genre not go to 11?!?  Glang Fever is the new rockumentary that follows Duke Diamond and Randy Hoo Ha of the Diamond Hoo Ha Men as they attempt to take over the world.  Check out the trailer for the film that may or may not be coming soon!

A Skin, A Night

The National teamed up with Vincent Moon, of La Blogotheque and Take-Away Shows fame, during the recording of Boxer to film A Skin, A Night.  The hour-long film will serve as an intimate look into the creative process of the band as they set out to make what ended up being their most accomplished album yet.  As an added bonus, the DVD will be packaged with The Virginia EP which includes twelve tracks of demos, an unreleased cover, live tracks, a radio session and b-sides.  You can check out the trailer for the film, due out May 22nd, below.

Ladyhawk Documentary - Let Me Be Fictional

Mona Mok and Rob Leickner, two Vancouver-based filmmakers, will be hitting the festival circuit this year with their documentary about Ladyhawk, Let Me Be Fictional. In Let Me Be Fictional, the band face their past, uniquely deal with society's view of what makes a functioning adult and consume vast quantities of sangria during the process of recording their second album Shots.  You can check out the trailer for the film below:

In regards to Shots, the trailer seems to support the assertion of the album's one-sheet that Shots is a night album and is the sound of Ladyhawk getting loose -- turning up loud, downing a few more and howling at the moon.  I, for one, can't wait for the record!  Here is a track from the record (due out 03.04.08) for your listening pleasure.

Shine a Light

I absolutely can't wait to see this film.  Say what you will about the Rolling Stones and their age or whatever but when you pair two legends like the Stones and Scorsese, you're going to get nothing but amazing results.  The film will be in theaters April 4th.

There have been several documentary films I've become aware of recently that I can't wait to see.  The most recent being "loudQUIETloud" which documents the Pixies tumultuous 2004 reunion tour.  You can check out the film's site for upcoming screenings or pre-order a copy of the DVD here which will be released 11/09/06.  Check out the trailer below:

Who Is Harry Nilsson...

I can't wait to see Who Is Harry Nilsson... (And Why Is Everybody Talkin' About Him)?.  Ain't It Cool News' very promising review suggested it was the best film they'd seen at the Santa Barbara Film Festival where it made it's debut.  You can check out the trailer below as well as an extended version on the film's MySpace page.
