Volunteer At The MusicNow Festival

Do you want to volunteer at this year's MusicNow Festival?  If you haven't checked out the lineup yet, it's another great one!  This year's lineup features contemporary music pioneers Bang on a Can All-Stars and Bill Frisell, alongside three of the world’s most creative rock bands, Grizzly Bear, The Dirty Projectors, and multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird.  Visual artist Karl Jensen will create a large installation in Memorial Hall, and Glenn Kotche; (WILCO) and Bryce Dessner (The National) will perform as special guests with Bang on a Can.

Right now we need extra ticket takers, ushers and general help.  If you're interested in helping with such a great event, email Kit Higgs at kithiggs@hotmail.com for more information regarding times and the benefits volunteers will enjoy for helping out.

Katkin Reflects On Vampire Weekend's Visit To Cincinnati

We've been blessed with a flurry of activity from the good professor Ken Katkin as of late.  In what caps a trifecta of recent additions to Katkin's Korner, here is his review of last month's Vampire Weekend show at the Gypsy Hut:

As of January 25, 2008, I'd never heard of Vampire Weekend. But when I took a quick January 26 foray into NYC, it seemed as though all of Gotham was buzzing about Vampire Weekend's allegedly fresh and infectious hybrid between African music and The Feelies (or maybe the Talking Heads). In Brooklyn, I was shown a youtube video for the band's signature tune "A Punk," which struck me as borderline enough that the band might potentially be either good or awful. One clever pal did express a prescient note of skepticism, warning me that Vampire Weekend at their best sounded like Paul Simon's Graceland and at their worst sounded like every generic English ska band from the 1980s.

When I returned to Cincy the next day, I stopped by Shake It Records to pick up the new Bonnie Prince Billy live CD Wilding In The West. While there, the shopkeeper told me that he had just received 200 tix for Vampire Weekend's semi-secret Cincy gig, which would take place on Wed Feb 13 in the Gypsy Hut, the smallest venue of the band's hyped and sold-out national tour. Having just spending a whole NYC weekend hearing people gush about this band of recent Columbia grads, it seemed like my inescapable karma to buy a pair of tix to go see them.

Ken Katkin Reviews Wussy & The Championship - Mar. 6th, 2008

On a pleasant winter night in Northern Kentucky, I attended one of the four Cincinnati-area gigs being performed within six weeks by the Queen City's finest band, Wussy, the mixed-gender quartet (part-Velvets, part-Vaselines, part-Neil Young, part-Love Child, part-Dead Moon) that is the current project featuring ex-Ass Pony (and local luminary) Chuck Cleaver.  This flurry of local activity was designed to allow the local heroes to test out some new material, and also to prepare them for their forthcoming road trip to SXSW in Texas, to be immediately followed by their second-ever spate of east coast tour dates.

This gig took place at a new venue, The Keystone Bar & Grill in Covington, Kentucky.  I'd never been there before (at least since the excellent Sonoma restaurant, which used to inhabit the same space, closed down a while back).  And frankly, I was a little alarmed when Wussy bassist Mark Messerly noted in the band's blog that the Keystone's myspace site portrays the club as "a nice place with lots of young energetic people acting energetically."  Which I guess was a euphemistic way of saying that the club portrays itself as a haunt for overaged fratboys and feather-haired ex-sorority girls on the make, and also for the handful of "upscale" (the Keystone's word, not mine) yuppies who toil in Northern Kentucky's nearby three-block corporate office-tower district.

It turns out that Wussy organized this gig as a favor to a slightly gay dad-rock band from Milwaukee called "The Championship" who had apparently begged for help in scoring a last-minute Cincy-area gig. Although "The Championship" had their moments, my advice to them would be to come out of the closet, lean heavier on their underutilized Bowie influence, lighten up on their overdone Uncle Tupelo influence, and play fewer songs.

Led Zeppelin Reuniting Tonight

In what has to be the coolest thing happening on the planet right now, Led Zeppelin has taken the stage for their show in honor of the late, great Ahmet Ertegun.  They kicked off the show with "Good Times, Bad Times" and I think it's safe to say that all those in attendance would unanimously agree this would qualify as one of the good times.  If you're interested in following the action you can get updated setlist info at NME's Live Blog of the event.  That being said, the first and only update so far came over half an hour ago so it looks like lil' Alan may have passed out from the excitement of his assignment.

I can't think of anywhere else I'd rather be than at that show but instead I'm sitting in a Starbucks, being rudely assaulted by the "bubbly" sounds of Colbie Caillat which "makes me crinkle my nose", trying to studying for my Evidence final.  Yes, very Rock n' Roll I know but I have a feeling the O2 Arena is just a tad more rockin' right now.  Here is to hoping and praying the band plays a few shows stateside.  Anyway, for those of us who can't be there, let's enjoy this raucous performance of "Whole Lotta Love" below.

P.S.  The NME blog is having some technical difficulties so I can't confirm this as 100% accurate but the updated setlist I've seen so far is: Good Times Bad Times, Ramble On, Black Dog, In My Time of Dying, For Your Life, Trampled Underfoot, Custard Pie, Nobody's Fault But Mine, No Quarter, Since I've Been Loving You, Dazed and Confused, Stairway to Heaven, The Song Remains The Same, Misty Mountain Hop, Kashmir, [Encore] Whole Lotta Love, Rock and Roll.  Thank You and Goodnight!!!

P.P.S.  It appears the above setlist is correct and NME has decided to post an ongoing news story to combat the live blog problems.  You can now get the updated setlist as it happens here.  Or maybe this page has/will crash too.  Either way, I'll try to keep updating the setlist as well.  Enjoy!

P.P.P.S.  You would be remissed to NOT take a look at the pictures on the Getty Images website from tonight's show.  The rock royalty in attendance includes Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, Jeff Beck, and Ryan Cabrera... WAIT!!!  Ryan Cabrera?  Who let him in there?  Better yet, who decided they needed to take a picture of him?  Looks to me like someone is trying AWFULLY hard to fit in.  Oh well Ryan, maybe image makeover #4 will be the one.

Alasdair Roberts Playing Cincinnati Tomorrow

Despite a lack of solid publicity confirming this show was happening, “the Scottish Will Oldham,” Alasdair Roberts, will in fact be playing at the Publico Art Gallery in Over-The-Rhine this Saturday (Dec. 1st) with Houston’s Charalambides opening.  The doors open at 9 pm with tickets going for $8.

If you didn't get tickets to see Robert Pollard at the Southgate House before they sold out, or would just prefer to see this show, it will definitely be worth it.  You can check out the video for "River Rhine" from Alasdair's most recent album The Amber Gatherers below:

The Evens Are Coming!

Ian MacKaye's band The Evens, which also includes Amy Farina will be performing in Cincinnati on Friday night.  Tickets are only $5 and are only available at Shake It Records as of right now.    There may be a limited number available at the door but I wouldn't wait until the night of the show to get tickets as they're selling fast!

Arcade Fire w/ LCD Soundsystem Coming To Louisville

Some excellent news for music fans in this area came from Dodge over at MOKB just before the start of the weekend.  Arcade Fire will be playing in Louisville and if that isn't good enough, LCD Soundsystem is going to be playing with them!

The show will be held at Waterfront Park on Wednesday, October 3rd.  Tickets for the all ages event will be $36 and go on sale July 27th at 10am with $1 from each ticket going to Partners In Health.

The Heartless Bastards to play Free Show in OTR

I read over at Spill It that the The Heartless Bastards will be playing a "Block Party" this Friday, June 29.  The free show is going to be on 14th Street in Over-the-Rhine right outside the Lightborne video production building, who are hosting the event. Lightborne were the creators of the excellent video for the band's song, "All This Time," found below.  The event will be from 7 to 11 p.m. so don't miss it!

The Smashing Pumpkins Nine Night Residency

I've finally arrived in the beautiful city of Asheville, NC for the Smashing Pumpkins first shows in the US since 2000.  A closure of I-75 couldn't stop me, although it did slow me down for about 5 hours.  In case you haven't heard, Billy & Co. are playing nine sold out shows to celebrate their return and prepare for the release of their new album Zeitgeist.  I was lucky enough to get tickets to a few of the shows before Ticketweb imploded when the tickets went onsale.

To say I'm excited is a gross understatement.  I walked out of the Metro on December 2, 2000 after the band's final show thinking I'd never hear my favorite band play their music again.  While some might argue that this isn't the Smashing Pumpkins, I could care less.  Billy and Jimmy have always been the driving force behind the band and they're back so I couldn't be happier.

I'll try and get some pictures up as well as my thoughts on the shows at some point.  For now, watch the video for "Today".

Opening Night - What can I say?  The band was amazing.  First things first, Ginger Reyes and Jeff Schroeder more than make up for the members they're replacing.  I was on Jeff's side and all I can say is he has some serious chops.  At one point Billy and Jeff were soloing/dueling as Billy appeared to challenge him and Jeff more than stood up to the challenge.  While we're on the subject of guitar playing, Billy Corgan is an absolute guitar god.  He has to be one of the most underrated guitar players on the planet.  I think this because so many people focus on his persona, voice, etc...  Regardless, he's amazing.

The new material is very strong.  I had tried to avoid listening to too many bootlegs from the European shows to reserve judgment on how the songs sounded live.  New songs that stood out as exceptionally good, aside from Tarantula, were Starz and Come On (Let's Go).  Also, the epic Gossamer is an experience all unto itself.

I can't really say much more right now.  The classics were just that.  That Orange Peel is an excellent venue.  The staff was definitely prepared to prevent any scalping and the process of checking IDs/orders, getting wristbands, and having hands stamped was very efficient.  Finally, the band played Translucent for the first time ever and then went right into Starla.  That alone was worth the drive and price of admission all by itself.

P.S.  Here are a couple stories and some pictures that were snapped on Saturday night.

Albert Hammond, Jr. - Live at The Basement

It's taken me a while to post about but I had a chance to check out Albert Hammond, Jr.'s solo set at The Basement last week in Columbus.  Yours To Keep has been in constant rotation since I got a copy of the UK release last year.  Considering how great the songs on the record are, I couldn't wait to see how Albert and his band would sound live.  After The Mooney Suzuki warmed up the fans, Albert's, "band of merry men," took the stage followed by their enigmatic front man.

The venue made sure the show was definitely up close and personal.  The area in front of the basement's stage looks like a very small conversation pit that probably houses around 20 fans.  For fans not in the pit, it can be a fairly difficult place to get a clear glimpse of the stage.  It definitely has a dark, underground feel.  Hence the name I guess...

Ratatat - Live at the Southgate House

So when was the last time you were at the Southgate House and witnessed stage divers, crowd surfing, and a band's drunken friend stagger onto the stage only to collapse and take some of the bands equipment with him?  Yeah, I couldn't remember when the last time that happened was either.  The Southgate House consistently puts on some of the best shows in the area but last nights Ratatat show was on a whole other level.

The evening began with Definitive Jux's artist Despot  who is the self-described, "Napoleon of this rap shit".  As he stalked the stage sporting a bright orange, Ratatat emblazoned foam finger he progressively won over the crowd as everyone filtered in.  After a few unsuccessful, albeit lighthearted, attempts to get the opposing Cincinnati/Newport residents to fight he unleashed the highlight of his set, "Crap Artists".

Next up was Professor Murder.  I absolutely loved their song "Free Stress Test" from last year but didn't really know what to expect from them live.  Needless to say, they didn't disappoint.  Their live act is a non-stop dance party which served as the perfect bridge between Despot's rhymes and Ratatat's searing, electronic instrumentation.

  • Professor Murder - "Champion" from Professor Murder Rides The Subway

After what seemed like a never-ending wait, Ratatat finally took the stage before the natives got too restless.  I had heard lots of good things about the band's live show but nothing could have prepared me for what was an absolute blast!  As I mentioned previously, the crowd went nuts with stage diving and crowd surfing eventually taking place.  One of the stranger and certainly hilarious moments of the night came when the band's friend Ben (or possibly Dan?) made his way onto the stage.  He appeared to be fairly intoxicated but it wasn't until, while leaning on a couple of the band's amps, he tumbled backwards taking the amps with him.  He remained passed out for a while making it clear just how wasted he was.  He eventually recovered to stagger around the stage, take off his shirt, do some strange dancing,  nearly go through the movie screen on stage, and then do a little crowd surfing of his own.

Mike Stroud's guitar playing is obviously great on record but live, it's nothing short of incredible.  His stage presence and energy transcends a majority of what any of his contemporaries are even remotely close to accomplishing.   Throughout the evening, Stroud seemed to be channeling a lot of spirit from Jimi Hendrix and Jimmy Page, and maybe even a little from Eddie Van Halen for good measure (when Van Halen wasn't so lame).  His amps certainly go to 11, that's for sure!  All in all, it was an amazing performance from the band as well as their drunken friend.  The crowd certainly couldn't have been happier and did everything in their power to return the favor.

P.S.  If anyone has any photos or video footage from last night, please share! My camera was sadly MIA.

Wojo Playing at the Southgate House Tonight!

Local favorites Wojo and Lonely the Seabird, along with Lexington, KY based Tula, are playing at the Southgate House tonight.  The doors open at 9 PM and it will only cost you $5.  If my calculations are correct that is approximately $1.666 per band.  1 dollar and 666 cents per band, how rock and roll is that!?!  Enjoy the show!

David Vandervelde and Richard Swift prepare for US Tour

Fresh off the heals of their current UK tour, David Vandervelde and Richard Swift will be back stateside to embark on a US tour in April.  Both of them have put out excellent albums this year and their live shows only enhance what you've heard on record.  The end of these tours won't mean a letdown for either of these artists though.  They both have new singles coming out just in time for summer.

Richard Swift's 3-song "Kisses For The Misses" 7" single off of Dressed Up For The Letdown will be out May 22nd.  To celebrate, Secretly Canadian is making one of the B-sides - Swift's awesome take on Prince's "Paisley Park" - available as a free MP3 for a limited time.

David Vandervelde is following suit by releasing "Nothin' No" as his second single from The Moonstation House Band on June 19th.  Never ones to shy away from that charitable spirit, Secretly Canadian is also giving away a couple of excellent freebies in anticipation of this release as well.  You can download "Nothin' No" and the blistering version of "Feet of a Liar" from David's recent Daytrotter session for free right now.  The aforementioned songs, as well as a new song called "Cute Pretender" and the beautiful "Dancing Sea Gulls Instrumental" will also be featured on the disc.  I picked up a copy of this single during David's stop in Cincinnati and both of these tracks are excellent.

So there you go, three great songs from two amazing artists.  Now get busy and figure out which of the following shows you're going to make it to.

Free David Vandervelde Show Tonight!!!

Make sure you don't miss David Vandervelde tonight at Alchemize!  The fact that the show is free potentially makes this the deal of the century!!!

Reminder: Secretly Canadian Showcase

I want to remind everyone about the Secretly Canadian showcase taking place at Birdy's in Indianapolis tomorrow night.  I mentioned it a week or so ago but wanted to refresh your memories so you don't miss out on what's going to be an excellent show.  In case you forgot, the bill includes Catfish Haven, The Impossible Shapes, and Early Day Miners.

Two local bands called Phyllis and Hey Hey Melodica are going to kick things off around 8 PM while Early Day Miners is expected to get things rolling for the Secretly Canadian portion of the evening around 10.  EDM will be followed by The Impossible Shapes and then Catfish Haven.  Basically, it's a "be there or be square" kind of situation if you ask me!

MAN MAN Cover RATM

I normally refrain from featuring grainy videos shot from the crowd at concerts due to the overall quality of them but one featured on Stereogum today was far too good to pass up.  What's not to love about MAN MAN covering Rage Against The Machine's "Bulls On Parade"?  This happened last night at the Bowery Ballroom in NYC and I can safely say this kind of stuff always makes me rethink where I'm currently living.  Thinking about last year's MAN MAN show at the Southgate House still puts a smile on my face and definitely goes down as one of my favorites.

Classic Sebadoh Line-Up to Tour

The classic Sebadoh line-up of Lou Barlow, Eric Gaffney and Jason Loewenstein are set to tour for the first time in 14 years.  This is, as most of you know, the line-up that was responsible for the classic albums III, Bubble and Scrape, and Smash Your Head on the Punk Rock.  The setlists however, won't just come from these albums but will span all era's of the band's existence.  Before you check out the tour dates below, I strongly suggest checking out the recently added archive of live bootlegs the band has made available.  There are some great recordings available for your downloading pleasure.  Now for the tour dates:

Secretly Canadian Showcase

It's no secret that we're huge fans of Secretly Canadian around here.  That means we were seriously excited when we heard about a showcase the label is putting on in Indianapolis on January 11th.  The show is going to take place at Birdy's and will feature Catfish Haven, The Impossible Shapes, and Early Day Miners.

Catfish Haven have most recently blessed us with their debut full length, Tell Me.  The record hasn't left my normal rotation of discs in my stereo or on my iPod since it's September release.  Check out the video for the title track below to get a taste of what you'll find at Birdy's.

The Impossible Shapes most recent release is Tum which had originally found it's way into the world via a very limited release of 300 vinyl copies on St. Ives back in early '05.  It will be great to see the band together especially considering the members have been busy with their various, and most excellent, side projects which include Aaron's, The Horns of Happiness and Chris's, Normanoak.  The animation for the "Florida Silver Springs" video, found below, made it one of my favorites of the year.

Last, but certainly not least, Early Day Miners will be rounding out the bill.  The so-called "musical cooperative" will certainly put you in the mood for what will be a great night of music.  You can check out the band performing a portion of their most recent album, Offshore, from their September show at Southpaw in Brooklyn below.  The entire show is available for download at  Baeble Music.

So there you have it folks!  Three incredible bands playing a showcase for an incredible label.  If you're anywhere near Indianapolis on the 11th of January I highly recommend that you make it out to this show and start 2007 off right.

Acoustic Cold War Kids

The Cold War Kids have posted 6 acoustic covers on their site that were performed at a breast cancer benefit on Sept. 24th.  If you aren't Marc Hogan and would like to hear them, you can check them out here.  I've included my favorites below:

Swearing At Motorists - Live at the Southgate House

One of my all-time favorite bands on Secretly Canadian's roster is Swearing at Motorists.  While opening up for The Wrens on Saturday night at the Southgate House, Dave Doughman presented all the evidence you could need to realize he is, and always will be, one of the greatest frontmen to ever grace the stage.

The band is touring for a month or so before Dave heads back to Berlin to begin life as a father of what I'm sure will be one of the most rocking kids ever.  With Joseph Siwinski on drums, the band showed that the world needs more Swearing at Motorists in our collective lives.  One step in that direction is the new album Secretly Canadian is giving away while the band is on tour here in the States.  Exile On Gipsstraße was recorded by Dave live in an underground train station in Berlin during the making of Last Night Becomes This Morning and is absolutely wonderful.  You can download it here until Nov. 2nd.

While you're waiting for the tracks to finish downloading you can check out some of the pictures I took during the bands set below if you like:

Beirut - Live at the Southgate House

Beirut's performance last night at the Southgate House completely exceeded my expectations.  There are generally two types of shows.  There are those concerts where you feel the band is just going through the motions.   They show up, they play their set, and that's it.   Then there are those shows that make you feel as if you are witnessing something special.  Once I saw various band members weaving in and out of the crowd playing their instruments along the way, coupled with the witty stage banter, it didn't take me long to realize this show was one of the latter.

After what sounded like less than an enjoyable experience at their previous tour stop in Cleveland, the band was clearly happy to receive such a warm welcome at the Southgate House.  The warm reception was reciprocated by an exceptional performance which included an encore that was humorously played without the band ever leaving the stage.  You can check out some of the pictures I snapped below:

The Interface with The Sleepy Jackson

The Sleepy Jackson made their appearance on AOL's The Interface.  You can listen to the podcast here.  (via MOKB)

MAN MAN & Danielson - Live at the Southgate House

It's been quite a while since I was as excited about a concert as I was for the MAN MAN appearance at this year's Lite Brite Festival.  Needless to say, I wasn't disappointed.  I can safely say this was the  first time that I found the band setting up to be an entertaining thing to watch.  It was amazing to see the seemingly never-ending parade of the tubes, lights, bells, pots, pans, and other assorted instruments MAN MAN pulled out as they prepared for their set.  Literally, the only thing missing from the stage was the kitchen sink.  The energy the band puts out while they perform is incredible.  It's hard to imagine a person NOT having a good time at one of their shows.  It's also hard to explain to someone exactly what one of their shows is like.  If you have a chance to see the band live, don't miss it.

You can check out some of the pictures I snapped of MAN MAN's set here.

Danielson ended the evening and while they put on a completely different kind of performance, it wasn't any less entertaining.  Daniel's stage banter with the crowd, specifically those in the balcony he light-heartedly promised to ignore for not coming down and joining everyone else on the floor, was quite entertaining.

You can check out the pictures from Danielson's set here.

Sound Team & Cold War Kids - Live at RBC (Secret Show)

Secret as in, it was a secret where they were finally going to have this thing!!!  Thankfully, the show finally ended up happening at RBC only a few hundred feet from its originally planned location at Alchemize (R.I.P.).

So anyway, the Cold War Kids put on an amazing live set.  I've definitely been looking forward to seeing them and they didn't disappoint.  The opener "We Used To Vacation" along with "Saint John" were stand-outs in my mind.  I definitely recommend picking up their EP's which are available here.

Sound Team ended the night and despite some problems with an amp put on another great show.  I was thrilled that they played "The Fastest Man Alive" which I felt was the highlight of the entire night.  Watching them tear through the material on "Movie Monster" reaffirmed my thoughts that Pitchfork is on some serious crack with their lame review.

I'm currently having trouble uploading the photos I took last night so in the meantime, check out the shots Joe took over at Each Note Secure.

The Walkmen & Richard Swift - Live at Headliners Music Hall

I saw Richard Swift and The Walkmen at Headliners Music Hall in Louisville on Saturday night.  Richard Swift's live set is definitely worth seeing if you get the chance.  He is wonderful live.  The Walkmen were, of course, excellent as well.  You can check out a few of the pictures I took below.

The Spinto Band & The Lovely Feathers - Live at Alchemize

I caught The Lovely Feathers and The Spinto Band last night at Alchemize.  Unfortunately, and much to my dismay, Dr. Dog had to cancel their appearance due to van troubles in Atlanta.  Regardless of this, the show was still great (obviously) as both bands put on a great show.  You can check out a few of the pictures I took below.
