I received a copy of Church's Song Force Crystal back during the Summer and since the album was released this month, I guess it's a good time to bring it up because I'm still listening to it several months later.
The first time I listened to this album I was thinking, "This is what Explosions in the Sky would sound like if their songs had vocals." Considering I love Explosions in the Sky and have often wished they would add some serious vocals to the mix, this album satisfied a long running desire of mine. I should point out, however, that Church ≠ Explosions in the Sky + Vocals. The equation may actually be something like Church ≥ Explosions in the Sky + Vocals. Who really knows. Fans of Beach House will definitely dig this band as well. All that being said, the best part is that for the majority of the album, Church doesn't really sound like anyone else.
Song Force Crystal is an album that is over before you know it. You'll quickly realize that you've lost all sense of time when listening to this record. That realization comes right before you'll decide to play the album again in its entirety. Check out the song "Aquamarine" from Song Force Crystal below.
