The awesome husband/wife duo the Handsome Furs, comprised of Dan Boeckner from Wolf Parade (duh, right?!?) and his wife Alexei Perry, are in town tonight supporting the recent release of their new album Face Control. The show is at the Southgate House and certainly won't disappoint. Doors at 8:30. Show at 9:30. See you there.
P.S. As was expected, the show was great with both the Cinnamon Band and the Handsome Furs playing great sets. I'm also pleased to say our friend Keith Klenowski took some more photos for us last night which you can check out after the jump.

Bluesy rock 'n roll was on full display last night at the Madison Theater as Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears and Heartless Bastards rewarded the eager Wednesday night crowd with two raucous sets.
First of all, I was blown away by Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears. While researching Black Joe Lewis I came across a comparison to James Brown. Having been fortunate enough to see James Brown perform live about 10 years ago this struck me as quite the comparison. I was anxious to see if Joe Lewis would have what it takes to be a potential heir to "The Hardest Working Man in Show Business" throne. Needless to say, I noticed the resemblance in band's feverish delivery of their funky brand of blues, soul and rock. The only thing missing was someone draping Joe in a cape as he exited the stage.
As for the headlining act, this was the first time I was able to see Heartless Bastards live and I wasn't disappointed. You read a lot about Erika Wennerstrom's distinctive voice. I can honestly say it's beyond compare. As good as she sounds on record I think hearing her sing live is truly the only way to appreciate the power of her voice. I also read a lot of good things about the band and their performances during this year's SXSW. If they played with half of the urgency and energy they brought to the stage last night the positive marks from those reviews would still be warranted. Don't take my word for it though, if the bands come through your town during the rest of their tour make sure you catch them.
Finally, Cincinnati's go-to-guy for great concert photos Keith Klenowski sent me a few pics he took last night for your viewing pleasure. You can check them out after the jump.

Professor Ken Katkin has once again compiled the setlist for Yo La Tengo's annual all-request set on WFMU which took place this past Friday. Here is the professor's recap of this year's festivities.
So right at 8pm, I asked my two kids what song we should request from Yo La Tengo in 2009. My son replied: "Punx In The Beerlight" by The Silver Jews. My daughter countered: "Popcorn" by Hot Butter. I broke the tie by requesting "Punx" as our family selection, with "Popcorn" as our alternate. We received a hint that Hot Butter would triumph when we heard Ira working out the (invented) guitar part of "Popcorn" while Gaylord and Sue were still welcoming listeners to the broadcast. And indeed, our family request was the very first song performed this year (albeit minus the guitar riffage that we had heard Ira rehearsing scant moments earlier).
I tried to keep score at home. Except for the Stevie Wonder guess in the second set and a few fleeting lyrics in the medly, I'm reasonably confident about these song IDs. (Thanks to metafilter poster Kowalski for assisting with the Can ID and to metafilter poster ocherdraco for making the Abba ID). Here's what I got:
